The winter environment is harsh and unforgiving, which I suppose is part of the appeal.  I’ve put together a couple of courses that I think help take the edge off the transition in to winter, which will increase your knowledge and help you maximise your enjoyment and safety.

How To Climb Snow & Ice

We”ll look at all the essential skills you need to go winter climbing safely.

  • Weather and climbing conditions
  • Snow and avalanche safety
  • Climbing movement on snow and ice
  • Snow and ice anchors and protection
  • Clothing and winter equipment
  • Navigation and route finding
  • Emergency procedures
This course can be run at a 1:1 ratio but better at 1:2 with your climbing partner.

How To Stay Safe In Avalanche Terrain

This Scottish based introductory course is ideal for the winter climbers and skiers out there, who wish to develop their understanding of snow and avalanches, but more importantly, want to learn how to apply that knowledge to effective planning, safe travel, and ultimately minimise the risk whilst enjoying the winter mountains.

  • Understanding snow, terrain, winter weather, and decision making
  • Interpretation of avalanche forecasts and planning
  • Practical application of skills in the mountains
  • Identifying the warning signs
  • Safe travel techniques and dealing with tricky avalanche terrain
  • Search and rescue skills
  • Reporting avalanches and observations
Maximum of 4 students in the group.
