Alpinism Skills

The alpine mountains are daunting places on first acquaintance.  Dealing with altitude, longer routes, and glaciers are not something an experienced UK climber or mountaineer are used to.  I’ve designed two courses that will help you make the transition and stay safer when making those early steps.

Learning

How To Climb Your First Alpine Summit

This intensive 4 day introductory course shows you all the skills you need to go and attempt alpine summits independently.  Over the 4 full days we’ll aim to cover:

  • Weather, mountain conditions, planning, timings, guidebooks, grades etc
  • Ecole de Glace (ice craft) and glacier travel inc. navigation
  • Moving together on ridges
  • Bivi’ing and huts
  • Clothing and alpine gear
  • Emergency procedures
This course is aimed at proficient rock climbers and winter mountaineers, those that have served their British apprenticeship and want to make the Alpine step with some support.
Group of 4 maximum
4 days – £1800/group ex. expenses (lifts, night in hut etc)

Learning

How To Travel On A Glacier & Crevasse Rescue

This will cover all key skills and areas of understanding like:

  • Route planning and map interpretation
  • Route finding
  • Timing and glacier conditions
  • Getting a partner out of a crevasse
  • Getting yourself out of a crevasse
  •  Emergency procedures
This is an introductory level, starting with the basics, but requires students to be proficient mountaineers.  Being confident at walking on snow in crampons, ice axe arrest etc.
Group of 4 maximum
1 day (good recap) – £450/group
2 day (ideal if new) – £900/group
Cost does not include expenses such at uplifts.
